| Description | Most people who suffer from an achilles tendon rupture are between the ages of 30-50. Their bodies are no longer as flexible and youthful as they imagine, and consequently, injuries are more common. When you suffer from an achilles tendon rupture, the initial feeling of a sharp pain in the lower leg and calf muscle area is soon replaced by tremendous anxiety. What kind of injury did I just experience? Do I need to see a doctor right away or can I wait for a day and see if the leg heals? It is recommended to go to a hospital or clinic immediately after the injury. A doctor will conduct an achilles tendon rupture test (aka Thompson test) after feeling the gap in your tendon region and asking you about your symptoms. Thereafter, the doctor will advise you on how to treat the ruptured achilles tendon. There are two main options: Surgical achilles tendon repair or non-surgical conservative treatment. Each has its pros and cons that will be discussed with you in detail. You will need crutches or a knee scooter during you healing process irrespective of whether you had surgery or not. It will take around 2 months for the tendon to regrow. Thereafter, you will need physical therapy and will start off a slow paced exercise routine. Most people will not be fully recovered till 6 months post initial rupture. Achilles Tendon Rupture |
