Link Emporer contains supplementary resources concerning the meaning behind it. I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome through the next century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I did not like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn't the only one! Lots of people shared my thoughts. Claudius desired to have a huge army. H-e expected men to volunteer to join. A lot of men just did not need to fight in wars. They didn't want to leave their wives and families. As you might have thought, not many men signed up. That made Claudius furious. What exactly happened? He'd a crazy idea. H-e thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius do not let any more marriages. Teenagers believed his new law was inappropriate. I thought it had been preposterous! I certainly was not likely to support that law! Did I mention that I was a priest? Among my favourite activities was to marry couples. Even with Emperor Claudius passed his law, I continued performing marriage ceremonies -- privately, needless to say. It had been really very interesting. Imagine a tiny candle-lit room with just the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper what of the ceremony, listening even while for the steps of soldiers. One evening, we did hear footsteps. It was frightening! Thank goodness the pair I was marrying fled in-time. I had been found. (Not quite as light on my legs as I applied to be, I guess.) I was thrown in prison and told that my punishment was death. I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Amazing things happened. Many teenagers came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes as much as my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love. One of these teenagers was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to see me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. Dig up further on a partner wiki by going to link emporer. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She decided that I did the best thing by ignoring the Emperor and going forward with the secret unions. On the morning I was to die, I left my friend a little notice thanking her for her friendship and devotion. I closed it, 'Love from your Valentine.' I really believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's. It was published o-n the afternoon I died, February 1-4, 269 A.D. Now, each year on this very day, people remember. But above all, they think of love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way in which of love, and they laugh -- because they realize that love can't be beaten!. |
